Local experts, hobbyists and professionals will share their passions and offer instructions during 100 free programs at six branches of the Volusia County Public Library system from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

Attendees can learn everything from how to create a gravity cake to how to draw a comic strip during the How-to Festival, an interactive community education event.

Basic dance: 11 a.m. Want to impress your family and friends with some new dance moves? Dance your way into this how-to workshop on basic dance moves from professionally trained ballroom and Latin dance coach Quanita May.

Bicycle maintenance and living a bicycle-based life: 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Dr. Jason Aufdenberg, an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor and bicycle enthusiast, will demonstrate basic bicycle maintenance and talk about living a bicycle-based life. Participants can get dirty with hands-on practice.

Drawing for fun: 11 a.m. Children and teens ages 5 to 12 can learn how to draw simple figures such as people, nature and everyday objects using nothing but a pencil and paper.

Hurricane preparedness with Spectrum News 13: 11 a.m. Join meteorologist Maureen McCann as she discusses basic severe weather preparedness including hurricanes. Seating is limited.

Patriotic wreath DIY: 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Discover how to make a simple wreath with just plastic tablecloths and a wreath frame.

Caring for your pet: 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Join Halifax Humane Society representatives and their ambassador dogs as they discuss the feeding, bathing and medical care that comes along with being a responsible pet owner.

Grocery shopping on a budget: 11:45 a.m. Learn to maximize your budget and shop smart with CHEK Lifestyle Coach III Quanita May.

How to read a book with your child: 11:45 a.m. Connect with your child through the journey of reading picture books. Learn tips and tricks from Children’s Librarian Ms. Rachel.

Basic hand sewing: 11:45 a.m. Hand sewing is a great skill that can help you create or repair clothes, toys and quilts. Explore how to mend a tear and sew a button.

Microsoft Word Online: 11:45 a.m. Learn how to get and create documents with this free version of Word.

Composting basics 101:12:30 p.m. Ever wonder if composting is right for you and your home? A representative from Big Value Garden Center will discuss composting and answer questions.

Window bird feeder craft: 12:30 p.m. Get crafty with the children's staff as they demo how to make a fun window bird feeder with the kids. All craft kits were donated by Home Depot. Kits will be provided while supplies last.

Learn to face paint: 12:30 p.m. Pick up some basic face painting techniques.

Brew the perfect cup of tea: 12:30 p.m. Staff will demonstrate how to make the perfect brew.

Library electronic resources: 12:45 p.m. Library staff will demonstrate the use of electronic databases and streaming services offered by the Volusia County Public Library.

Healthy nutrition and planning: 1:15 p.m. Finding the right nutrition plan can be confusing because there's always a new trendy diet plan around the corner. A registered dietitian will explain how you can find a plan that works for you.

Relaxation and mindfulness: 1:15 p.m. Need to unwind from a busy day? Learn breathing exercises for relaxation through some simple how-to steps. Seating is limited.

Google Apps: 2 p.m. Library staff will discuss this web-based tool, which includes Google docs, drive, images, translate and more. Seating is limited.

Upcycled K-cup seed starters: 2 p.m. Want to start your own garden from seeds? Discover how easy it is to grow your garden by upcycling used K-cups.

Become a ghost hunter: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check out professional ghost hunting equipment and conduct an investigation with American Ghost Adventures.

Explore the outdoors: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Sierra Club will inspire you to enjoy and protect the wild places where you live.

Roller derby: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet the awesome athletes of the Thunder City Derby Sirens and learn about this exciting sport.

Attract butterflies to your yard: 11a.m. to 3 p.m. The DeLand Garden Club will help you plan your garden to create a certified monarch butterfly sanctuary.

Investigate UFO sightings: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn about the scientific study of the UFO phenomenon from the Mutual UFO Network.

Make a family tree: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Discover your family's history with the Roots and Branches Genealogy Society.

Create marble paper: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Library staff will demonstrate paper marbling. Participants can take home a kit to create beautiful decorative paper.

Prepare for and mitigate a disaster:11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hurricane season starts June 1. A staff member from Volusia County Emergency Management will share tips to get ready.

Recipes and Reads: Family culinary labs: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Taste what library staff makes during this interactive family oriented program.

S.T.R.E.A.M.: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children and teens are invited to learn and be creative with a variety of activities.

Creative Happiness Institute: 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dr. David B. Axelrod will present Interactive writing exercises.

Make your yard earth friendly: Noon and 2 p.m. The Florida Native Plant Society will host several presentations.

Start a legal living will: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to discuss and document care and comfort choices. Representatives from Halifax Health Continuing Care will provide information and answer questions about Five Wishes, an easy-to-use advance directive.

Adopt a pet and be a responsible owner: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to adopt a pet and be a responsible pet owner. Representatives from Southeast Volusia Humane Society will offer pet care tips and guide individuals and families through the pet adoption process.

How to create with machines: 1 to 3 p.m. Learn how factory machines use computer programming to cut materials to make everyday household items and even parts for other machines. Then watch a demonstration with the library Cricut Maker as staff creates a keepsake for you to take home.

Create a Florida friendly landscape with native plants: 1 p.m. Paul Rebmann of the Florida Native Plant Society PawPaw Chapter will explain the importance of native plants and how to attract pollinators to your yard.

Get started with pickleball: 1 p.m. Members of the Pictona Pickleball Club will explain how to get started with this popular sport.

Sewing certification: 1 p.m. Visit the Launchpad to get certified to use library sewing machines, a prerequisite for participation in sewing programs at the Ormond Beach Regional Library.

Intro to homebrewing: 2 p.m. Learn how to get started with home brewing during this 45-minute program.

How to perform CPR: 2 p.m. Emergency medical technicians from Volusia County Beach Safety will demonstrate how to perform CPR.

Create a cement mosaic coaster: 2 p.m. Join staff in the Launchpad to create a cement and glass tile mosaic coaster. All supplies will be provided while supplies last.

Introduction to playing the ukulele: 11 a.m. Join Ashlee and Eliott Hughes of Beachside Music Lessons & Therapy as they lead an interactive and introductory demonstration of the different parts of the ukulele as well as how to tune it, play a few chords and strum.

How to make tea from yaupon holly: 1:15 p.m. Join Yaupon Brothers as they demonstrate how tea is made using this Florida native plant.

How to attract butterflies and bees: 1:15 p.m. Master Gardener Evelyn Shapiro will explain which plants you can add to your yard to attract butterflies and bees.

How to create a gravity cake: 2 p.m. Join Pastry Chef Alejandra Galan as she demonstrates how to create and decorate a gravity cake. Galan has participated in Food Network’s Chocolate Meltdown: Hershey’s After Dark and Disney+’s Foodtastic.

How to train a dog: 2 p.m. Join Nancy Govoni as she demonstrates how dogs are trained for obedience, service and therapy work and how to differentiate between service and therapy dogs.

How to make a paper bag kite: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Let your creativity soar as you make a paper bag kite to take home and fly.

How to make balloon animals:11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by to see how balloon animal dogs are made and get one to keep.

How to groom your rubber ducky: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to give your rubber ducky a gentle bubble bath. This demonstration will focus on bath time cleanliness. Rubber duckies will be available while supplies last.

Festival games 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Kids can join staff for fun games and activities.
